Department of Teeth

Every Tooth Accounted For

The Department of Teeth handles the collection, inspection and filing of every baby tooth placed under a pillow. Its paperwork is famously thorough: receipts with condition reports, letters from the Tooth Fairy, certificates for first teeth and a full set of forms for the nights that don't go to plan.

Tooth traditions, briefly

Families have marked lost baby teeth for a very long time, and the customs vary wonderfully from place to place. In many English-speaking homes the tooth goes under the pillow and the Tooth Fairy leaves something in exchange. In Spain and much of Latin America, a small mouse called Ratoncito Pérez does the collecting; in France and Belgium, it's La Petite Souris. Some families toss teeth onto the roof or bury them in the garden with a wish.

There's no single right way. Some households leave coins, some a small book or a note; some make a bigger fuss for the first tooth and keep it simple after that. What children tend to remember is the ritual itself: placing the tooth carefully, the morning check and the evidence that someone noticed.

That's where the paperwork comes in. A receipt or letter turns a quick swap into a small story, and a Delay Notice or Affidavit rescues the nights when the tooth goes missing or the visit runs late.

Questions from grown-ups

Department of Teeth

Answers for the grown-ups who keep this department's paperwork flowing.

Q.1What does the Tooth Fairy leave?

It varies from family to family: coins, a note, a small book or a tiny treat. There's no official rate. Our guide to Tooth Fairy money and traditions covers how families decide.

Q.2What if my child loses a tooth while we're travelling?

The Department of Teeth operates everywhere. Put the tooth in a small envelope under the pillow wherever you're staying, or file a Delay Notice if the visit needs to wait until you're home.

Q.3Can the Tooth Fairy write in another language?

Yes. Personalised documents in Spanish, Portuguese, French and German are included with a Bureau Pass, which is handy for bilingual families.

Q.4How does the verification QR work?

Every document carries a “Scan to verify authenticity” code. Scanning it opens a page confirming the case number and the issuing department, written so a child can read it too.
