Elf Field Operations

Watching Kindly. Reporting Daily.

Elf Field Operations coordinates the family elves who visit homes and classrooms each December. Its paperwork covers the whole season: an arrival letter for day one, nightly notes, incident reports for when the marshmallows go missing and a goodbye letter for Christmas Eve.

The department also keeps the Bureau's library of elf ideas: more than sixty original, cheap and practical scenes for every kind of night, each with the note your elf leaves. The free 24-night planner maps out the season and pairs every idea with a matching note; pass holders can also swap or shuffle nights and get fresh ideas built from what's already in the house.

The family elf tradition

Many families welcome a small family elf into their home for the weeks before Christmas. The elf is said to report back to the North Pole each night and return to a new spot by morning, often having got up to something silly on the way. Children wake up and hunt for them, which is a large part of the magic.

Every family runs it differently. Some elves arrive at the start of December, some in late November. Some get up to elaborate mischief; others simply move and leave a note. There's no rulebook, and the best elf seasons are the ones that suit the grown-ups' energy as well as the children's delight.

If you're new to it, keep it simple: a name, a warm arrival letter, a short note most nights and a goodbye on Christmas Eve. Our elf ideas are sorted by mess level and set-up time, so a five-minute, no-mess scene is always close at hand.

Questions from grown-ups

Elf Field Operations

Answers for the grown-ups who keep this department's paperwork flowing.

Q.1What if I forget to move the elf?

It happens to every field operative eventually. Have the elf leave a note saying they stayed put to keep a special eye on things, or that the North Pole asked them to rest. Then pick a five-minute idea for the next night.

Q.2How many elf ideas do I need?

Not one per night. Many families plan a handful of bigger scenes and fill the gaps with simple moves and notes. The 24-night planner helps spread the effort across the season.

Q.3Can a classroom have an elf?

Yes. Classroom elves are a lovely tradition. Use the class name in the arrival letter and choose from our classroom elf ideas, which avoid food and big messes.

Q.4Do I need a particular kind of elf?

No. Elf Field Operations welcomes elves of every size, style and hat colour. The paperwork works for whichever elf your family hosts.
