What makes them special is detail. Keep a Kindness Ledger through the year, and Santa's letters can mention the time your child helped a friend, learned to swim or shared the last cookie.

Re: Personal Correspondence from Santa Claus

Greetings from the North Pole, Maya!

It has been a very busy season here, with elves wrapping, painting and testing toys all day long. But I always make time to write to the children whose files make me proud. Yours is one of them.

I hear you are very keen on dinosaurs and painting. So is one of my elves, as it happens. She talks about little else. The workshop is humming, the reindeer are practising their landings, and your name has come up more than once, always in the most cheerful way.

Keep shining, keep sharing and keep being the wonderful person you are. Christmas Eve will be here before you know it.

How families handle Santa's mail

Writing to Santa is one of the best-loved Christmas customs, and the replies are just as treasured. Some children post their letters in early December, some leave them by the fireplace and some dictate them to a grown-up with enormous seriousness. Many national postal services run seasonal letter programmes, and families add rituals of their own, like sending the letter up the chimney or leaving it beside a plate of cookies.

A reply works best when it's specific and warm. Children notice when a letter knows something true about them: a new skill, a kind act, the name of the dog. They also notice when it's kind. The Bureau's North Pole documents never threaten, never mention lists to fear and never promise particular gifts.

As children grow, the questions change. For the moment your child asks the big one, the Junior Agent Promotion offers a warm, ceremonial way to welcome them into the work of keeping the magic going.

Questions from grown-ups

North Pole Liaison Office

Answers for the grown-ups who keep this department's paperwork flowing.

Q.1When should a letter from Santa arrive?

Most families deliver Santa's letter in December, often in the first or second week so it can be reread before Christmas. Replies to children's letters usually arrive a few days after they're posted.

Q.2Will Santa's documents ever be negative?

No. Every North Pole document is positive. Santa praises effort and kindness, and anything still growing is described gently and with encouragement.

Q.3What is the Junior Agent Promotion?

A premium certificate for the moment your child asks “Is Santa real?”. It answers with an invitation to join the work of keeping Christmas magic going, complete with a commission and an oath of discretion.
