Terms of service

Form BW-T1

The rules of the Bureau, in plain words. They are written to be fair to you, and kind to the children the paperwork is for.

Last updated Effective the same day

§1These terms

These terms apply when you use The Bureau of Whimsy at bureauofwhimsy.com (“the Bureau”, “we”, “us”), including the Filing Desk, the Kindness Ledger, the elf planner and clearance passes. By using the site you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.

Our privacy notice and refund policy form part of these terms.

The Bureau is run by MUSI BABILA BRYANT.

§2Who you’re buying from

Clearance passes and gift passes are sold through our online reseller, Paddle.com. Paddle is the Merchant of Record for these orders: it takes the payment, charges any sales tax or VAT, sends your receipt and processes refunds, under Paddle’s buyer terms. For help with a charge you can write to us, or contact Paddle directly at paddle.net.

§3Grown-ups only

You must be an adult (18 or the age of majority where you live) to use the site and to buy anything. Children are very welcome to enjoy the documents you make for them, with you.

§4What the Bureau provides

The Bureau makes personalised novelty documents (letters, certificates, forms and receipts from magical characters) for you to print at home. They are works of whimsy for family fun rather than official documents of any earthly authority. The Bureau’s jurisdiction is strictly magical: it is not affiliated with any government, tax authority, postal service or company whose characters or traditions it celebrates.

Standard Clearance is free. It includes unlimited classic documents and a monthly allowance of 2 personalised documents, plus other features described on the clearance levels page. We may adjust what the free level includes from time to time.

§5Clearance passes

  • The Holiday Season Pass ($9.99) gives 120 days of access and the Annual Magic Clearance ($29) gives 365 days, each counted from the moment of purchase. Prices are in US dollars.
  • Each pass is a single, one-time payment. It is not a subscription: it does not renew, and you will not be charged again.
  • There are no accounts. A pass is stored in your browser and can be restored on your other devices with the email address you paid with and your order code. Please keep your order code safe.
  • A pass is for the personal use of the grown-up who bought it, including for their family and for a class or group they lead. Please don’t share your pass or order code publicly or resell it.
  • We may switch off a pass that has been refunded, charged back, shared publicly or obtained fraudulently.
  • If we ever change what a pass includes, the passes already bought keep at least what was promised when they were sold, for their full term.

§6AI-drafted documents

Personalised documents are drafted by an AI model from the details you provide, under the Bureau’s rules for kind, positive, age-appropriate wording. We may decline a request, or use classic wording instead, if the details provided aren’t suitable for a children’s document.

AI can occasionally produce something odd or imperfect. Please read every document before you print it, mail it or give it to a child. You decide what your child sees.

§7Fair use

You are responsible for what you type into the Bureau. Please don’t use it to:

  • create anything hurtful, frightening, hateful, sexual, violent or otherwise unsuitable for a child;
  • include someone else’s personal information without the right to do so;
  • mislead anyone into thinking a document comes from a real government, agency or company, or use one to obtain anything of value;
  • get around usage limits or pass checks, overload the service, scrape it in bulk, or interfere with its security; or
  • break the law.

We may limit or suspend access to protect the service, other people or children.

§8Our work and your documents

The Bureau’s designs, wording, departments, seals, emblems, templates and software belong to us and are protected by intellectual property law.

You may print, keep and share the documents you make for personal, family, classroom and group use, including sharing photos of them online. You may not sell them, resell or redistribute the templates, or generate documents in bulk for sale.

§9Refunds

Passes come with a 14-day, no-questions refund. The details are in the refund policy. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law.

§10Availability and changes

We work hard to keep the Bureau open, especially after bedtime in December, but we can’t promise it will always be available or error-free. We may change, add or remove features. If we ever have to close a paid feature for good, we’ll refund the unused part of any pass affected.

§11Disclaimers and liability

The Bureau is provided “as is”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises beyond those in these terms, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses.

To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.

§12Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. Changes don’t affect purchases made before them, and if a change is significant we’ll say so clearly on the site before it takes effect.
