Mischief Within Regulations

Each March, leprechauns are licensed to carry out a modest amount of mischief, and the Leprechaun Compliance Unit makes sure every incident is properly filed. Its Mischief Notice records what happened overnight, reviews any traps the household has built and accounts for the gold.

Leprechauns, traps and green footprints

Leprechauns come from Irish folklore, where they're usually pictured as small, clever shoemakers with a hidden pot of gold. In many homes and classrooms today, especially in the United States, St. Patrick's Day has picked up a playful custom: children build a trap the night before, and in the morning they find it sprung, empty and surrounded by evidence.

The evidence is the fun part: green footprints, a tipped-over chair, a trail of gold-wrapped chocolates, a tiny note. The leprechaun always escapes, always compliments the trap and usually leaves a little treasure behind.

Keep it light. Compliance Unit mischief is small and easy to tidy: nothing broken, nothing spooky, nothing that would worry a child.

Questions from grown-ups

Leprechaun Compliance Unit

Answers for the grown-ups who keep this department's paperwork flowing.

Q.1How do you make leprechaun footprints?

Dip the side of a closed fist in washable green paint and press it down, then add toe dots with a fingertip. Test on scrap paper first, or use green paper cut-outs on floors.

Q.2What should a leprechaun leave behind?

Usually a small treasure: gold-wrapped chocolates, a shiny coin, green stickers or a note. The Mischief Notice explains the visit officially.

Q.3Can classrooms use the Mischief Notice?

Yes. Classic notices are free and unlimited, so every trap in the class can receive its own official review.
